Party Bread Appetizers
For your next holiday gathering make some rye and pumpernickel party bread appetizers! These little appetizers will be the hit of any party!
I make party bread appetizers using Pepperidge Farm Rye and Dark Pumpernickel party loaves. They are the perfect size for finger sandwiches making them the best little appetizer or otherwise known as hors d’oeuvres.
Since these party breads are somewhat seasonal if you can’t find them in your grocery store or Wal-Mart try looking for cocktail breads. I would recommend trying to get them online but it may be real expensive that way.
It really is fun making party bread appetizers. Mainly because you don’t need a lot of ingredients and the ingredients you do use can be mixed and matched for either the rye bread or the pumpernickel bread.
Rye and pumpernickel party breads make some of the best appetizers! Think of it this way, it’s like making teeny tiny sandwiches adding a swipe of condiment like mustard, mayonnaise, or horseradish topped with some meat, eggs, sauerkraut and or vegetables, adding some greenery like a few sprouts, or some spinach and finish it off with a frill toothpick.
Can you imagine all the fun it’s going to be like making these appetizers and building individual pieces of bread with each having a unique flavor?! I am getting excited just talking about it! So let’s get to the next question….

Making Party Bread Appetizers
Prepare work surface:
Lay all your ingredients that you are going to use on a board or work surface.
Ingredients I am using today includes:
- Rye and pumpernickel party breads
- Corned beef deli style
- Ham deli style
- Pastrami deli style
- Hard boiled eggs
- Green and black olives
- sliced tomatoes
- Mustard, mayonnaise and horseradish (the real deal)
- Swiss cheese
- Radish Sprouts (I use China Rose Radish Sprouts kinda gives a little kick to the appetizer) See my article on “How To Grow Sprouts“
Assemble Breads:
Start off first with slathering on some condiments to one side of the bread.
Then add a slice of swiss cheese.
Add a good helping of meat and top with another slice of swiss cheese.
Place prepared breads on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Assemble all breads to fill up baking sheet. Be sure to toast about 6 pieces of plain bread per sheet if you will be using egg or strictly vegetables.
Once the pan is full place in oven and broil for a few minutes or until cheese has melted. If only toasting bread flip bread once during the broiling process.
When the cheese has melted and or the plain breads have toasted remove baking tray from oven and allow to cool.
Add finishing touches to the top of the party breads containing meats like sprouts, tomatoes, cucumbers or pickles and poke with a frilly toothpick and gently lift bread up with a spatula and place on a serving board.
For the toasted breads add any condiments, vegetable, egg, cheese (if desired), top with sprouts, sliced tomatoes, some fresh cracked pepper and poke with a frilly toothpick and gently lift bread up with a spatula and place on a serving board.
Enjoy!
