Tonnarello Rome Menu: A legendary twist on traditional Roman cuisine.

Tonnarello Rome Review: Incredible Roman Cuisine — a poppy place. (1)

Nestled in the heart of Trastevere, that charming Roman quarter, Tonnarello has etched its name into the palates of both savvy locals and hungry-ridden visitors alike.

It's the kind of place that would earn a thumbs up from any self-respecting Uber driver in Rome, deeming it the go-to for "Real Roman food" or the location where true Romans choose to eat.

For those weary travelers who've conquered the Colosseum, exchanged glances with numerous statues at the Vatican, and navigated the obnoxious realm of tourist traps surrounding popular plazas, Tonnarello emerges as an answer to one’s prayer for peace and authentic food. After journeying through the well-trodden tourist paths of Rome, I found myself craving an authentic Roman experience. And there, amidst the cheesy cliché, I discovered my culinary sanctuary in Rome – none other than Tonnarello. Believe it or not, it's as true as an Italian love story. My Italian love story…

What you should know about the lines! Arrive early.

Unless you find standing in lengthy queues for food reminiscent of hipsters at a Sunday brunch cool, it's wise to show up early. Despite being tucked away, this hidden gem has been uncovered by locals, visitors, and avid food enthusiasts alike.

The restaurant has lots of seating

From romantic outdoor seating to plenty of nooks inside the restaurant, this is no traditional size Italian restaurant when it comes to space. It’s a double-decked ladies and gents! There is both a lower and upper restaurant and even smaller nook-like spaces. If we are waiting in line, the chances are there is space, the servers are just seating everyone.

Where to find Tonnarello in Trevestere

Piazza della Scala, 19.
If you opt for an Uber ride to reach this restaurant, rest assured that the driver will get you as close as possible. The restaurant is discreetly nestled away from the main road, so just navigate the turns, and you'll discover it.

What is Tonnarello known for?

A visit to this restaurant is incomplete without indulging in their pasta. Tonnarello, named after the traditional square-cross-sectioned egg pasta spaghetti, presents a unique twist on the conventional rounded pasta. In essence, these heavenly noodles are a little square, yet bursting with an abundance of personality. It's nothing short of a miracle!

Tonnarello Rome Menu Review

After dining in the heart of Trevestere Rome Tonnarello three times, these are the top menu favorites.

Tonnarello Carbonara

Egg, bacon, cheese, and pepper - simple yet so much more. During WWII, soldiers improvised pasta with whatever ingredients they could find, and this concoction became a favorite among English and American troops. Besides achieving victory in war, they unwittingly birthed an iconic dish that has now become a staple of Roman cuisine.

Tonnarello Cacio E Pepe

For those gastronomes who relish a hint of spice, this plate of golden cheese and pepper is sure to enliven your senses any day. With roots tracing back to ancient times, it stands as a symbol of Rome. Therefore, when in the eternal city, indulge in the timeless pleasure of Cacio e Pepe.

Tonnarello al sugo con le POLPETTE (Pasta homemade with tomate and meetballs)

Tonnarello Rome Review: Incredible Roman Cuisine — a poppy place. (10)

In every group of diners, there's that one person who unfailingly opts for spaghetti with meatballs. Tonnarello, however, crafts a meat sauce that sends a shock to your heart and returns it to a place of love and peace, all in the first bite of course. Every noodle spells out the four-letter word, love.

Tonnarello Cozze, Pecorino E Pomodorini (Mussels and cherry tomatoes)

Tonnarello Rome Review: Incredible Roman Cuisine — a poppy place. (11)

Much like every gathering harbors a spaghetti and meatball enthusiast, there's bound to be a seafood lover in the mix as well. Tonnarello, aware of this, offers the finest mussels cooked with tomatoes, undoubtedly constituting one of the most vibrant dishes on the menu.

Rigatoni al Pesto with pinenuts cherry tomatoes

Tonnarello Rome Review: Incredible Roman Cuisine — a poppy place. (12)

Ideal for little eaters (toddlers) or anyone enamored with tubular-shaped noodles, the pesto rigatoni captivates with its nutty fusion of pine nuts and cherry tomatoes.

Prosciutto e melone

Tonnarello Rome Review: Incredible Roman Cuisine — a poppy place. (13)

Sweet, salty, and wonderfully uncomplicated. A quintessential summer appetizer in Italy, the finest prosciutto e melone I've savored was at Tonnarello. The restaurant prides itself on sourcing only healthy, fresh melons and the highest quality cured meats.

Carciofo alla Giudia (Crispy Roman Artichoke)

Tonnarello Rome Review: Incredible Roman Cuisine — a poppy place. (14)

Salty, crunchy, and then delightfully soft, Carciofo alla Giudia stands as a must-try dish in Rome. Interestingly, it wasn't the Italians who originated this idea, but rather the Jews! The term translates to "Jewish-style artichokes," and it traces its roots back to the 16th-century Jewish ghetto in Rome. The word "giudio" in Romanesco refers to "Jew."

An Amaretto

Aside from a staked menu of traditional Roman delights, Tonnarello offers an extensive drink menu.

We enjoyed an Amaretto. It is a sweet Italian liqueur that originated in Saronno and is often paired with dessert.
